BROADWAY ON TRUMP: RESISTANCE ISN'T FUTILE
Broadway's unofficial post-election strategy: hope for the best, prepare for the worst.
Citing Donald Trump's campaign statements, commercials and recent appointments, many theater artists -- including actors, writers and producers -- fear that as president he'll curtail civil liberties, accelerate climate change and undermine the nation's moral authority and standing in the world.
In particular, they cite Trump's appointment yesterday of Breitbart News Chairman Stephen Bannon as White House chief strategist. The Southern Poverty Law Center said Bannon, who helped Trump get elected, has a "long history of bigotry" and under his leadership Breitbart became "the media arm of the racist alternative-right movement." The real estate developer and reality TV star -- who falsely claimed for years that President Barack Obama was born outside the U.S and broke historical precedent by not releasing his tax returns -- said in a 60 Minutes interview broadcast on Sunday that people are protesting "only because they don't know me." He has proposed cutting taxes, boosting infrastructure spending and rewriting trade deals. The Wall Street Journal reported that that could boost growth but also inflation. Trump said on 60 Minutes: "Don't be afraid. We are going to bring our country back."
Broadway was overwhelmingly for Hillary Clinton. What follows are analyses, plans to protest and some favored advocacy groups.
