It's the first musical to announce its closure since the Tony Awards on June 9. The Prom was nominated for 7 Tonys and won none. The show concerns egomaniacal Broadway actors who descend upon a midwestern town to advocate for a lesbian couple to attend their high school prom.
Weekly grosses averaged $577,000 this year, which suggests consistent operating losses. Producers have announced a national tour for 2021 and a Netflix movie adaptation.
The lead producers are Bill Damaschke, Dori Berinstein, and Jack Lane. Casey Nicholaw directed.
